Loyola Knocks Off No. 8 McKendree, 3-0

Colton Brooks tallies first career double-double to spark Ramblers to victory

CHICAGO (March 18, 2021)

In Short
Colton Brooks and Luke Denton delivered 12 kills apiece and Loyola University Chicago (10-3, 6-3 MIVA) hit .327 (44-11-101) as a team to upend No. 8 McKendree (8-2, 7-2 MIVA), 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 tonight at The Alfie Norville Practice Facility. With the win, the Ramblers hit double figures in victories and picked up their first win versus a nationally ranked opponent since April 17, 2019, when they topped No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne.

How It Happened
Neither team led by more than two points in a back-and-forth first set that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes. With the score knotted up at 23-23, Cole Schlothauer hammered home consecutive kills to close out the Ramblers' 25-23 victory.

The Ramblers started off set two by out-scoring McKendree, 12-6, thanks to a pair of kills from Denton and to three Bearcats service errors and three attack errors. McKendree responded by going on a 7-3 run to trim Loyola's advantage to 15-13, but a Brooks kill and a Ben Montplaisir service ace pushed the lead up to 17-13 and the hosts held on to win, 25-22.

In set three, Loyola trailed by as many as five points and late in the action was behind, 19-15, before mounting a late comeback. Back-to-back kills from Denton and Jimmy Meinhart preceded a Bearcats error that sliced the deficit to 19-18. McKendree had an answer to the Rambler spurt and tallied three of the next four points to bump its lead to 22-19, however two kills from setter Garrett Zolg were part of Loyola's 6-1, set-closing burst run that provided the Ramblers with a 25-23 decision the clean sweep.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Brooks notched his first career double-double, posting 12 kills and 10 digs, while Denton added 12 kills.
  • Schlothauer fell just short of a double-double of his own, racking up eight kills and 10 digs, and Zolg totaled 35 assists, seven digs and three kills.
  • Loyola head coach Mark Hulse won his 97th match as a head coach.
  • Ethan Carroll smacked a team-high nine kills to pace McKendree, which dropped its second straight match.
