Late Rally Falls Short In 4-3 Loss To Bradley

Thomas posts two hits and two RBI, while Veres fans six for Loyola

CHICAGO (April 11, 2021)

In Short
Bradley (13-11, 6-5 MVC) held off Loyola University Chicago's (6-20, 2-8 MVC) late charge to hang on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap of a twin bill Sunday afternoon at Loyola Softball Park. All seven runs scored in the game came in the final two innings of play on a cold afternoon in Rogers Park.

How It Happened
Loyola's Madison Veres and Bradley's Camryn Schaller were locked in a pitcher's duel until the Braves were able to push across three runs in the top of the sixth inning for the first tallies of the contest.

Second baseman Vicki Zaluske's two-run single was the big hit in Bradley's three-run sixth inning that gave it the lead for good.

Loyola immediately cut into the deficit in its half of the sixth inning on Allyson Ivey's RBI single that scored Amelia Thomas, who had reached on a base hit of her own earlier in the frame. The Ramblers looked poised for a big inning in the sixth and had the bases loaded with one out, but were unable to inflict further damage.

Bradley tacked on what would prove to be a crucial insurance run in the seventh inning when Camryn Monteer tripled to left to score Jillian Navarro, to extend its lead to 4-1. However, Loyola wouldn't go down without a fight and Amelia Thomas' two-out double to center field brought in Abby Brown and Teagan Sopczak, as the Ramblers brought the winning run to the plate with the tying run in scoring position. However, Taise Thompson, who entered in relief in the sixth inning for Bradley, retired Madison Ebeling on a fly out to right field to end the threat, giving the teams a split of today's doubleheader.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Monteer went 3-for-4 and Zaluske tallied a pair of hits of her own for Bradley.
  • Thomas drove in a pair of runs and rapped a pair of hits for Loyola, which also received two hits from Ivey.
  • Veres struck out six and yielded seven hits in a complete-game effort for the Ramblers.
