Ivey’s Home Run Provides Difference In Loyola’s Wild 10-9 Win Against UNI

Ramblers match season high with 10 runs in taking down Valley’s hottest team

CHICAGO (April 16, 2021)

In Short
Allyson Ivey's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning lifted host Loyola University Chicago (8-21, 4-9 MVC) to a 10-9 victory over Northern Iowa (20-14, 10-4 MVC) in a wild nightcap of a twin bill at a chilly Loyola Softball Park Friday afternoon. The win earns the Ramblers a split of today's doubleheader with the Panthers and halts UNI's winning streak at nine games.

How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0 before even taking their first at-bat, the Ramblers hung five runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings, in the process chasing Northern Iowa ace Kailyn Packard from the game before the end of the second inning.

A four-run second inning, highlighted by Nova Sinskul's two-run home run down the left field line, moved the Ramblers ahead, 5-2, but the Panthers would strike back with three tallies of their own in the top of the third, to knot the score at 5-5 in a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair.

Loyola reclaimed the edge thanks to a three-run fourth inning that started with Madison Ebeling's lead-off homer to left center. Sinskul followed with a bunt single and Ivey knocked her in with a booming double to the gap in right. Pinch runner Sophia Remsik accounted for the third Rambler run of the frame when she scored on a UNI throwing error as the hosts surged ahead once again, this time at 8-5.

Caitlin Engelking, who had reached on an infield hit, scored on a double steal in the bottom of the fifth to extend Loyola's lead to 9-5, but UNI mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth, plating four runs on five hits to tie the game at 9-9.

Ivey led off the Ramblers' half of that inning with a mammoth home run to left field, providing the game-winning run, and Bri Clifton, who entered in relief in the top of the sixth, set down the Panthers in order in the top of the seventh for her first win of the season.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Loyola pounded out 14 hits, one shy of equaling its season high of 15 set versus Western Illinois on March 14, and its 10 runs equaled a season high, set against Oakland on March 6.
  • Four Ramblers had multi-hit outings, led by Ebeling and Ivey with three hits apiece, while Sinskul and Engelking tallied two hits each.
  • Clifton was terrific in relief for the second time today, collecting her first win of 2021 by hurling 1.2 innings of hitless work.
