CHICAGO (April 17, 2021)
Â
In Short
Adara Opiola's two-run single in the top of the ninth inning lifted visiting Northern Iowa (21-14, 11-4 MVC) to a 3-1 victory over a pesky Loyola University Chicago (8-22, 4-10 MVC) squad in the finale of a three-game weekend series this afternoon at Loyola Softball Park. Loyola had been seeking its second straight series victory in Missouri Valley Conference action, but dropped two of the three contests to UNI this weekend.
Â
How It Happened
Like yesterday, the Ramblers got to UNI ace Kailyn Packard for a run in the first inning, this time snatching a 1-0 advantage when first baseman
Allyson Ivey poked a double down the left field line to score
Madison Ebeling, who had reached on a lead-off walk.
Â
Northern Iowa drew even with a tally in the top of the fourth inning on Sammy Moss' run-scoring double and the Panthers threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases against Loyola reliever
Madison Veres. However, the lefthander slipped out of the jam and escaped unscathed, stranding three UNI runners on base.
Â
Loyola squandered a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh when
Caitlin Engelking smashed a double to left center with one out, but the Ramblers could not push across the winning run.
Â
The game stayed tied until the ninth inning when Madison Parks led off with a walk and moved to third on Sammey Bunch's double. That set the stage for Opiola to deliver the game-winning hit and her single to right plated both Parks and Bunch to provide the final margin.
Â
A Look at the Numbers
- Five Ramblers totaled hits on the day and Ivey's first-inning RBI moved her closer to tying Lauren Moore for the program's all-time RBI mark with 124. Ivey has knocked in 119 runs in her illustrious career.
- Junior Sydney Ruggles struck out four Panthers and did not allow an earned run in 4.0 innings of work for Loyola.
- Opiola went 3-for-4 to lead UNI's offensive attack.
- Packard fanned eight hitters and scattered five hits after giving up five earned runs in only 1.2 innings yesterday in game two of a doubleheader.
