Ramblers Score Early, Crush Valpo, 7-1

Ivey homers, Ruggles fans nine, in complete-game win

CHICAGO (April 21, 2021)

In Short
On a brisk afternoon, Loyola University Chicago (9-22, 5-10 MVC) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 7-1 rout of Valparaiso (5-26, 1-15 MVC) today at Loyola Softball Park. The Ramblers wrapped up an 11-game homestand today and have now won four of their last seven contests.

How It Happened
After Sydney Ruggles retired the Brown & Gold in order in the top of the first inning, striking out a pair of batters, the Ramblers jumped all over Valpo starter Taylor Knight, plating three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Madison Ebeling got things going for Loyola, coaxing a lead-off walk, then stole second base before Amelia Thomas smoked a single to center. A double steal put Loyola on the board first and after Allyson Ivey was hit by a pitch, the Ramblers scored runs on RBI ground outs by Sydney Barnett and Nova Sinskul for an early 3-0 advantage.

Loyola added to its lead in the second inning when Ebeling singled to right to bring in Abbey Jacobsen, who had reached on a base hit to lead off the frame. Ebeling's hit chased Knight from the game and an inning later, Ivey crushed a home run to straightaway center to give Ruggles even more breathing room as the Ramblers' advantage swelled to 5-0.

Valpo finally got to Ruggles for an unearned run in the fifth inning, but the Ramblers stole momentum right back with a pair of scores in their half of the frame. Caitlin Engelking, who has been swinging a hot bat of late, laced a two-out double down the left field line for her second hit of the afternoon to score Ivey and Thomas to seal the outcome.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Ruggles struck out nine and did not allow an earned run, while scattering five hits, in the complete-game win for her fifth victory of the spring.
  • Loyola totaled nine hits on the day, with Jacobsen and Engelking tallying two hits apiece to lead the offense.
  • Ivey's homer was the 20thof her career and in addition to scoring three times today, the first baseman inched closer to tying Lauren Moore's program record for career RBI (124). Ivey has driven in 120 runs in her career.
  • Valpo has dropped 15 straight games.

Up Next
The Ramblers play their first road games in a month when they visit Missouri State for a three-game series, April 24 and 25.
