Loyola Earns Doubleheader Split, Cuts Down Indiana State, 3-1

Allyson Ivey drives in two runs, Veres tosses complete game, as Ramblers snap losing skid

CHICAGO (May 7, 2021)

In Short
Madison Veres tossed a complete-game and Allyson Ivey went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead Loyola University Chicago (11-28, 7-16 MVC) to a 3-1 victory over Indiana State (19-26, 12-14 MVC) to earn a split of a doubleheader at Loyola Softball Park this afternoon. With the win, the Ramblers put an end to a six-game losing skid and Ivey crept within one run batted in of tying the Loyola career record for RBI (124).

How It Happened
For the second time in as many games today, Loyola scored first, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Ivey and Amelia Thomas, but this time was able to make that lead hold up.

Veres, who surrendered eight hits on the day, worked her way out of a tough spot in the fifth inning, stranding runners at first and second before the Ramblers added an insurance run in their half of the frame. Madison Ebeling coaxed a one-out walk from Indiana State starter Lexi Benko, then promptly stole second and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Following a lineout, Ivey punched a single back through the middle to score Ebeling and extend the Loyola advantage to 3-0.

The Sycamores put Veres' back against the wall in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out. The senior lefthander got Kaylee Barrett to ground out, although that provided Indiana State with its first run of the game, but with the tying run back at the plate, Veres got TeAnn Bringle to ground out and end the threat.

Indiana State brought the tying run to the plate again in the top of the seventh following Bella Peterson's one-out double. However, once again, Veres squelched the rally, getting Isabella Henning to fly out before striking out Annie Tokarek to end the game.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Veres improved to 5-8 on the year with the victory and struck out two in her fifth complete game of the spring.
  • Ivey and Thomas combined for five of Loyola's six hits in the game, with Caitlin Engelking providing the other knock with a double.
  • Ivey's three-hit game was her fourth of the season and she enters tomorrow's regular-season finale needing one RBI to tie Lauren Moore's program record (124) for a career.

Up Next
Loyola and Indiana State play a single game tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT at Loyola Softball Park in the final game of the 2021 regular season. The Ramblers will honor their senior class following the game.
