Anneka Murrin Chases A Third MVC Title

It is without a doubt that rising senior Anneka Murrin has established herself as one of the premier distance runners in Loyola University Chicago cross country/track & field history. Just a few of her numerous accomplishments include leading the Ramblers to consecutive Missouri Valley Conference cross country championships, winning back-to-back individual titles at the MVC Cross Country Championships, making NCAA appearances this spring and being named The Valley's Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

Murrin's achievements go on and on, but not only is the Yarmouth, Maine native excelling in her sport, but also in the classroom as an exercise science major, representing herself, the program, and Loyola in stellar fashion.

As the fall semester approaches, it is no surprise that Murrin has set ambitious goals for herself. Aiming to win a third consecutive MVC title, Murrin's summer training has revolved around building up the miles each week as well as fortifying her mindset.

"I am happy with my accomplishments so far, but I think I have more to offer." said Murrin. "I just want to challenge my body and my mind to finish the season knowing that I put everything into it."

While being the favorite can boost confidence and morale, it can also bring a lot of anxiety on any athlete to reach their potential. Even though Murrin won the MVC title in the 1,500m run this past spring, she struggled with the pressure to perform leading up to the race.

"This summer I am trying to neutralize my mindset," added Murrin. "It's a fine balance between performing to the standard expected of you, and making sure your athletic success and potential doesn't dim your own mental health."

With the much appreciated support of her coaches and her teammates, Murrin is confident in her preparations both physically and mentally leading up to her final year as a Rambler. The rising senior credits a lot of what pushes her to work hard to those who are important around her, whether that is her coach, Alan Peterson, or her teammates. The 2019-20 season took on additional motivation for Murrin, as she was running for her mother who lost her eyesight in the summer.

"I am definitely a people pleasing person, so it helps me when I run for my team and other people rather than for myself," said Murrin.

With a strong team consisting of talented individuals, Murrin is more than excited to get her senior season underway. Her focus on keeping her goals simple, yet important to her wholeheartedly, is not only exciting for the program, but for all of the Rambler fans watching this fall.

"As simple as it sounds, I am just excited to make the most out of my senior year," Murrin concluded.
