Ryan Schwieger Named MVC Men’s Basketball Newcomer Of The Week

Princeton transfer earns honor for second time this season

CHICAGO (January 10, 2022) – For the second time this season, Loyola University Chicago forward Ryan Schwieger (Matthews, N.C./Weddington/Princeton) has been tabbed Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.

Schwieger had a big week in Loyola's return to the hardwood for the first time since December 10, averaging 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals, while shooting 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the field and 40 percent (4-for-10) from three-point territory in victories over San Francisco (79-74) and Bradley (78-71 OT).

The 6-foot-7 senior pumped in a season-high 24 points, hitting 9 of 10 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from long range, and grabbed three rebounds, to spark the Ramblers to a 79-74 victory over San Francisco, which entered the game with a NET ranking of 32, in a hastily scheduled contest in Salt Lake City on January 6.

Schwieger, who leads the team in scoring this season (12.5 ppg), then produced 13 points and four boards off the bench as Loyola erased a 16-point, second-half deficit to stun Bradley, 78-71, in overtime, on January 8 to run the Ramblers' home-court win streak to 29 games. He has scored in double digits in each of his last four appearances and Loyola is 8-0 this season when he delivers double-digit points.

Loyola (11-2, 2-0 MVC) returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Valparaiso at 8 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. The Ramblers have won seven straight games overall heading into Tuesday's showdown with the Beacons.
