Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Game Day In Gentile Leads To 3-0 Sweep For Ramblers

Loyola University Chicago Men's Volleyball defeated Saint Francis University 3-0.

CHICAGO (Jan. 14, 2021) – It has been 650 days since the Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team has played a match in Gentile. Today, they ended that dreaded streak and made the return even sweeter by getting a win over the Saint Francis University Red Flash, grabbing their first sweep of the season.

FROM COACH HULSE
"I don't know if anyone has ever played a match against Saint Francis that wasn't tough. The guys digested the scouting report really well and we focused on our side of the net. I think we did a really good job, and it was good enough for us to get a win. With where we are at this point of the year, I am pretty happy with this step forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ramblers were ready to play from the very first point. They came out strong off a kill from Andrew Lyons and never let up. The lead gained on a five-point service run from Parker Van Buren solidified the 25-20 win in the first set for Loyola.

From there, the Maroon and Gold stop looking ahead. They kept their foot on the gas as Van Buren went on another service run to give the Ramblers an early lead. Although the Red Flash fought back, it wasn't enough to secure a win as Loyola took the second set 25-17.

In the third and final set, Saint Francis pushed to try and grab a win, but the Ramblers weren't having any of that. The two teams were neck and neck for most of the third, however, a service run from Colton Brooks and a kill from Henry Payne gave Loyola the much-needed push to close out the final set 25-21.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
  • Redshirt freshman Van Buren had an outstanding night in just the third start of his career with the Ramblers. He hit an impressive .593 with 17 kills and only one error (27 attempts). He also ended the night with two blocks.
  • Brooks continues to be a force for Loyola at the pin and in middle back. He ended the night with 10 kills while also registering a team-high seven digs.
  • Commanding the offense was none other than Garrett Zolg. The redshirt senior finished the evening with 33 assists, which averaged out to 11 per set.
  • Along with the efforts from Brooks behind the 10-foot line, Payne and Matt Oakley contributed heavily to the defense. Both athletes finished the match with six digs, the most they earned this season.
  • Helping Van Buren on defense at the net were Lyons and Jimmy Meinhart. The middle blockers each tallied two blocks.

UP NEXT
The Ramblers have a quick turnaround as they have less than 24 hours to prepare for another match against the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders, who lost 3-1 to Lewis on Jan. 14. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
