Loyola Gears Up For Two Conference Games This Week

CHICAGO (October 4, 2022) – Loyola University Chicago (5-2-2, 1-2-0) prepares to play two Atlantic 10 games in the same week for the first time this season. Seeking its first road win, Loyola will head to Richmond, Va. for Wednesday night's match against VCU (0-5-4, 0-0-2), before hosting nationally-ranked Dayton (8-0-1, 2-0-1) in Rogers Park on Saturday afternoon.

LAST TIME OUT
Loyola dropped a heartbreaker last Saturday after a game-deciding own goal gave Saint Louis a 2-1 victory. Senior midfielder Oscar Dueso scored for Loyola, as the Ramblers led 1-0 at halftime despite being limited to a season-low six shots in the tough road matchup. It was only the second time in nine matches that the Ramblers logged fewer shot attempts than their opponent. The Billikens found the equalizer shortly after halftime and then benefitted off the Loyola miscue in the 61st minute. Graduate student goalkeeper Simon Jillson remained solid, as he has all season, and tallied a season-high four saves.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Loyola enters the VCU match carrying a plus-10 goal differential, ranking as the fourth-best margin in the Atlantic 10
  • The Ramblers have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 16-6 on the season
  • Loyola is tied with Dayton for the A-10 lead, and ranks 12th nationally, in shutout percentage (.556)
  • Loyola ranks second in the A-10 for most shots per game (13.56)
  • Billy Hency is leading the way with 11 points, including four goals and three assists, followed by John Gates with seven points on two goals and three assists
  • Three of Hency's goals have been game-winners
  • Hency moved into fifth place in the Loyola record book for most career assists (20) and needs three more to take over sole possession of fourth place
  • Hency ranks 17th among active NCAA Division I active career leaders in both goals (23) and assists (20), while ranking 13th in points (68)
  • Nine different players have scored a goal for the Ramblers this season including three from Fabian Becerra and two from Dueso
  • Jillson has registered the third-most shutouts (4) in the A-10, and he is ranked third among conference leaders in GAA (.687) and fifth in save percentage (.760)

GLANCE AT VCU
Coming off a pair of scoreless draws in A-10 play, and four ties in its last six matches, VCU is still searching for its first win of the 2022 campaign. The Rams, who are under the direction of 13th-year head coach Dave Giffard, will be well-rested heading into Wednesday's match since their last outing was Tuesday, Sept. 27, which they dropped 1-0 at home against Florida International. VCU opened conference play against UMass and traveled to Saint Louis in its most recent A-10 outing. Sophomore forward Camilo Comi, a Clemson transfer, leads the Rams with seven points including a team-high three goals. VCU has been outscored 19-7 on the season.

UP NEXT
Loyola will host four of its final five regular-season matches, starting with Saturday's A-10 battle against Dayton which is slated for 3 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
