Men's Volleyball Soars Past Hawks For First MIVA Win

Loyola Men's Volleyball defeated the Quincy University Hawks 3-0.

CHICAGO (Feb. 10, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team kicked off MIVA play this afternoon as they hosted the Quincy University Hawks. In this first match of MIVA play, the Ramblers came out hot, sweeping the Hawks 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Loyola took control of the game from the first serve. The first 10 points of the game came from the Hawks not making a single serve, letting the Ramblers run away with a lead. They capitalized on this opportunity even more by not making any attack errors in the first set for the Maroon and Gold to hit .647 as a team and secure the 25-11 win.

From there, the Ramblers kept the momentum and the lead. The Hawks grabbed more points in this set, but it didn't help them secure a win as Loyola ended the second set 25-20. In this set alone, Parker Van Buren had six kills, putting him in double digits heading into the third.

The Maroon and Gold finished the job to end the game on a high note. The two teams went back and forth with the lead for the first three points, but it didn't take long for the Ramblers to tame the Hawks, resulting in a 25-18 win in the third and final set.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
  • The biggest staple for this Rambler offense continues to be Van Buren. The redshirt freshman had another standout game as he tallied 16 kills. Along with that, he only made two errors which gave him a .682 hitting percentage.
  • Grabbing some aces from the service line was Garrett Zolg, who ended with a match-high five aces. He also commanded the offense for the Maroon and Gold as he secured 28 assists.
  • On defense, Colton Brooks led the charge with nine digs. He also earned three blocks, which was tied for the team-high on the night with Andrew Lyons
  • Four Ramblers hit above .400 in today's game, including Van Buren, Lyons (.625), Brooks (.545) and Henry Payne (.429).
