Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 14 Ramblers Sweep No. 10 Flyers For First Time Since 2018

Loyola Men's Volleyball defeated the No. 10 Lewis University Flyers.

CHICAGO (Feb. 26, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team was back at home as they took on MIVA rival No. 10 Lewis University. After three sets, the Ramblers came out victorious as they swept Lewis (25-18, 25-22, 25-22). The last time the Maroon and Gold defeated Lewis was in March 17, 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set showed how even these two teams are. They were neck and neck throughout most of the first set until the media timeout. From there, the Ramblers went on a run with Garrett Zolg at the service line. They also did not allow the Flyers to record any kills from that point on, helping Loyola win the set 25-18.

The start of the second set told a very similar story. The game was close throughout until the Ramblers made the push off a service run. It gave them the much-needed push to secure a 25-22 win in the second set to go up two sets to none against this top 10.

When they returned to the court from the break, the Ramblers were ready to keep the battle going. They came out swinging from the start, working to finish the job they started at the beginning of the game. Although the Flyers chiseled away at the lead Loyola gained, it wasn't enough for them to come back in this match. The Ramblers won the third and final set 25-22.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
  • Cole Schlothauer came out from the start, finishing the first set on top with five kills. With this big jump, he was able to finish the match with 12 kills, the most of anyone on the floor.
  • One other Rambler grabbed double-digit kills, and that was Henry Payne. The outside hitter finished the night with 10 kills and only three errors, hitting an efficient .389.
  • Also hitting efficiently was Andrew Lyons. The middle blocker who was back in his first game since Feb. 10 had eight kills and no errors, resulting in an .800 hitting percentage. He was also the match leader in blocks as he totaled four.
  • Zolg continues to make his presence known on the court. He finished the match with 36 assists, the most he's had in a three-set match this season. He also added another three aces, officially ranking him fourth in the record books for most career aces.
  • The back row defense was hunkered down by both Zolg and Payne. This senior duo finished the game with six digs apiece.
