UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (April 5, 2022) – Graduate student
Devin Johnson finished just two shots off the individual lead as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team turned in a stout final-round effort at the weather-shortened Redhawk Invitational in University Place, Wash.
Â
After seeing the first day of the event washed away on Monday due to consistent rain and wind, Loyola made the most of its one round at historic Chambers Bay Golf Course (par 71; 7,068 yards), putting up a 299 to finish tied for seventh place, only two shots off a spot in the top four.Â
Â
Boise State used a 287 to claim the team title, with the Broncos' Max Charles securing individual medalist honors after carding a two-under-par 69.
Â
"We had an absolute blast this week," Loyola head men's golf coach
Erik Hoops commented. "Obviously, it's a little unlucky to come all this way and only get one round in, but we made some great memories."
Â
Johnson shined today in the Pacific Northwest. After playing the front nine at two-over-par, the Geneva, Ill. native caught fire down the stretch, birdying three of his last four holes to climb into a tie for third place with an even-par round of 71.Â
Â
Junior
Timmy Crawford narrowly missed out on joining Johnson in the top 10 on the final leaderboard, firing a two-over-par 73 to share 11
th place.
Â
Redshirt senior
Tyler Anderson finished the back nine at one-over-par as part of a 76 that saw him tie for 46
th. Graduate student
Ryan Magee matched Anderson's effort on the front nine, ultimately closing his day with a 79 (T-86
th), while junior
Zach Walsh posted an 82 (T-111
th).
Â
"Finishing where we did in this field is a testament to how much better our team has gotten throughout the years," Hoops continued. "I remember our first trip out here not having the greatest memories and now we are finishing in the top end of the field with a player in the top three individually. I couldn't have asked for anything better."
Â
Loyola faces a quick turnaround, as it returns to action this weekend, April 9-10, at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
