TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (May 7, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago softball team traveled to Indiana for its final regular season series as it took on Indiana State. After playing in this double header, the Ramblers came out 1-1 on the day, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second game 9-1.
GAME 1
It was a strong start for the Ramblers as their bats were hot at the top of the first.
Amelia Thomas started the scoring for Loyola with a home run to left field while
Abbey Jacobsen made it home shortly after off a hit from
Sydney Barnett to make the score 2-0 from the start.
Once they were on the board, the Sycamores chiseled away at the lead gained by the Ramblers, ultimately tying the game up in the fourth inning. They went on for four more innings as the two teams duked it out into extra innings before a home run from Indiana State ended the game in the eighth inning, resulting in a 3-2 loss for Loyola.
Thomas and Jacobsen were the only two to register runs in this game while Thomas and Barnett were the two who added on an RBI each. Thomas also hit a triple in this game while
Haley Wallace added on a double of her own. Of course, it wouldn't be a Loyola Softball game without
Madison Ebeling stealing a base. She added one more to her season total in the third inning.
In the circle for the Ramblers was freshman
Peyton Pepkowski. She pitched all eight innings, registering eight strikeouts and only walking two batters while facing 32.
On defense, Jacobsen and Thomas were the two key players again. They had eight and seven putouts, respectively, while Ebeling had the most assists with three.
GAME 2
Shortly after the first game ended, the second game began. Again, Loyola was the first team on the scoreboard off a run from Thomas thanks to a single from
Haley Wallace. Although the Sycamores tied it up, it didn't stop the Maroon and Gold.
In the third inning, Loyola came up with three runs that started with a home run from Ebeling before Thomas and
Tori Boysen also made it home. With this huge advantage, the Ramblers headed into the top of the fifth with a score of 4-1.
Until they had an even bigger inning. The Ramblers had their best inning of the season with five runs scored by
Ava Bieneman, Ebeling, Thomas, Wallace and
Nova Sinskul. With this 9-1 lead after four, the Ramblers' defense kept the Sycamores from adding on any other runs. This led Loyola to end the game in the fifth inning 9-1.
Thomas ended the game scoring the most runs for the Ramblers, finishing this one with three. Following up close behind her was Ebeling while
Tori Boysen, Wallace, Sinskul and Bieneman all added on their own runs to get the score up to nine. Ebeling had the team's only home run of this game.
Andie Broniewicz was in the circle for all five innings. In that time, she only walked two batters and only allowed one run. On defense, Thomas had the most putouts with eight while Sinksul had the most assists with three.
