CHICAGO (July 5, 2022) – In an announcement made by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) on Tuesday, five members of the Loyola University Chicago women's golf team have been named All-American Scholars. This year's announcement gives the Ramblers their most selections in a single season in program history.
Senior
Lorenza Martinez (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) enjoys her fourth selection in as many years while sophomore
Abby Thielbar (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) earns recognition for a second consecutive season. Rounding it out and receiving their first career selections are junior
Caroline Dayton (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) along with freshmen
Grace Suter (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) and
Jolie Brochu (Goodrich, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic).
Martinez, a marketing major, turned in her best season yet for the Maroon & Gold. Now a three-time MVC Scholar Athlete Team member, the Menomonee Falls product's 77.7 scoring average ranked second on the Rambler roster. Martinez's 4
th place finish (80-75-73) at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship matched the best finish by a Rambler in program history and earned her a place on the MVC All-Tournament Team.
Thielbar, who majors in molecular and cellular neuroscience, enjoyed a historic sophomore season. Her sixty-three birdies across the season set a new program record. She proceeded to break more records at the FAU Paradise Invitational, shattering her own 54-hole program record with a 215 (66-73-76) that included a first-round 66, the lowest 18-hole round in program history. Thielbar closed the year by ended earning all MVC Honors after sharing 26
th at the MVC Championship with a 241 (85-78-78).
Dayton took a step forward for the Maroon & Gold in her junior year, finishing with a career-best 79.0 stroke average. The political science major posted her top result of the season at the Ball State Cardinal Classic, led by a season-low final-round 74 that gave her a share of 12
th with a 54-hole 229 (75-80-74).
Suter enjoyed a very successful freshman season, posting a 79.3 stroke average with 14 rounds in the 70s. She made her mark early on, handing in a one-over-par 73 in her debut round for the Ramblers at the Redbird Fall Invitational en route to tying for 21
st (73-79-74=226). The accounting major posted her 54-hole season-best score of 219 (75-74-70) at the FAU Paradise Invitational, guided by a season-low two-under-par 70 that saw her finish tied for 40
th.
Brochu appeared in 25 rounds for the Ramblers while double-majoring in biology and psychology. She carded her best round of the season with a one-over-par 73 in the first round of the Coyote Creek Classic to finish tied for 21
st (73-81-75=229). Her 54-hole season-low of 227 (74-79-74) came at the Spring Break Shootout, guided by two rounds of 74 to finish tied for 41
st.
A total of 1,485 women's collegiate golfers were recognized on the WGCA All-American Scholar Team. The criteria for selection are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 required.
