Â
In Short…
For the second straight game, Loyola (6-19, 1-11 A-10) rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter but couldn't close out the comeback attempt in Saturday's 48-47 loss to St. Bonaventure (5-23, 2-11 A-10).
Sam Galanopoulos led the Ramblers with 16 points while
Sitori Tanin nearly recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Â
How it Happened
Loyola jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a made 3-pointer by Tanin ignited the early scoring, and the Ramblers moved out to a 9-4 advantage midway through the first quarter on a Galanopoulos jumper. But St. Bonaventure opened an eight-point lead after closing the period on a 13-0 run, sparked by three consecutive treys while limiting Loyola to 19% shooting in the frame for a 17-9 lead.
Â
Both teams were limited to single digits in the second quarter, with Loyola outscoring the Bonnies by a point to trail 25-18 at halftime. The Ramblers struggled to take advantage at the offensive end after forcing 11 St. Bonaventure turnovers in the second quarter alone.
Maya Chandler knocked down a three to end an 0 for 11 shooting drought for Loyola, and converted a steal to a fastbreak layup in the final seconds of the first half.
Â
The Ramblers pulled within three at 25-22, with back-to-back buckets from
Kira Chivers and Galanopoulos early in the third period. But the Bonnies rattled off another run to move back ahead by as much as 17 at the four-minute mark. Loyola would end up trailing by 16 entering the final quarter at 42-26.
Â
In similar fashion as Wednesday's game at Davidson, Loyola caught fire in the fourth and closed on a furious 15-2 run to get within a point with 52 seconds left in the contest. A three from Chivers cut the deficit to single digits with six minutes left, and Tanin made it a six-point game at 46-40 with under three minutes. Galanopoulos came up with a pair of clutch baskets down the stretch, and Tanin completed a traditional three-point play to put the Ramblers down 48-47 at the 52-second mark. Loyola got the stop it needed on the defensive end but couldn't find a go-ahead bucket in the closing seconds.
Â
Loyola would end up outscoring the Bonnies 21-6 in the final stanza, marking the third straight game where the Ramblers had 20-plus points in the fourth quarter after being held to single digits in the third period.
Â
St. Bonaventure had three players in double digits, led by Breauna Ware's 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
