CHICAGO (March 31, 2023) – Behind a staunch defense, the 10
th-ranked Loyola men's volleyball team improved to 13-0 inside Gentile Arena this season with a 3-0 sweep over Lindenwood in MIVA action Friday evening.
Cole Schlothauer had a match-high 12 kills while the Rambler defense limited the Lions to just a .148 hitting percentage as a team.
How it Happened
Neither team was able to create any level of separation in the opening set, as neither team led by more than three points in the opening frame.
A Lindenwood service error gave Loyola set point at 24-21, but three unanswered points pulled the set level at 24-all. Schlothauer connected out of the outside to give Loyola a 25-24 lead and a Lindenwood error clinched the 26-24 opening set victory.
There was virtually no separation in the second set, with both teams trading points throughout the set before a block by
Jimmy Meinhart, and
Jack Yentz put the Ramblers up, 17-14, forcing Lindenwood to burn a timeout.
The Lions would get within two down the stretch at 22-20, but Loyola claimed the final three points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Back-to-back Lindenwood errors gave the Ramblers set point at 24-20 and an ace by
Brian Voight, 1-of-4 Loyola aces in the match, clinched the second set.
Loyola took an early 5-2 lead in the third set and maintained a lead for the duration of the clinching set, but not without a fight from Lindenwood. Loyola would build a lead as large as five midway through the third at 17-12 following another kill from Schlothauer, but Lindenwood pulled within one late.
With Lindenwood serving and looking to remain in the match, down 24-23, a Rambler overpass gave the Lions an opportunity to tie the match up.
Dan Mangun stepped up with the solo block out of the middle to clinch the sweep.
