CHICAGO (April 1, 2023) – The 10
th ranked Loyola men's volleyball team held off a feisty Quincy Squad Saturday evening inside Gentile Arena on Senior Night.
With the victory, Loyola clinched at least a share of the MIVA regular season title and will look to secure the outright title next weekend.
Prior to the match, Loyola's three seniors,
Cole Schlothauer,
Colton Brooks and
Nick Martinski were all honored as part of Senior Night. Schlothauer notched his 1,000
th career kill in the match, finishing with 15 total kills on the evening.
How It Happened
Loyola stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to a pair of 25-16 and 25-23 victories. The Ramblers looked to secure the sweep, using a 3-0 run to take a 21-19 lead in the third set and force Quincy to burn a timeout. Back-to-back kills by Schlothauer started the run before a Hawks error gave Loyola its third consecutive point.
Quincy wouldn't go down without a fight, winning six of the next eight points to pull out the 25-23 victory and send the match to a fourth set.
It was much of the same in the fourth set, as Loyola built a 22-20 lead off the kull from
Parker Van Buren. The Hawks rallied once again, winning five of the next six points to take the fourth set by an identical 25-23 margin and force Saturday's match to a decisive fifth set.
It was all Loyola in the deciding frame, jumping out to a quick 5-1 advantage. A Schlothauer ace made it 3-1 in favor of the Ramblers, before
Jack Yentz followed up with a kill to push the lead to 4-1. A Quincy error quickly made it 5-1, forcing a timeout by the visitors.
Another Yentz kill gave Loyola a 10-3 cushion, it's largest lead of the set, and Loyola would close out the dominating 15-7 victory in the fifth set to improve to 14-0 at home this season, the fifth-longest home winning streak in program history.
Loyola closes out the regular season on the road taking on Ball State (Thursday) and Ohio State (Saturday). A win by the Ramblers in either of their final two matches, or one loss by both Ball State and Ohio State, would clinch the outright MIVA regular season title.
