CHICAGO (June 15, 2023) – A total of 139 Loyola University Chicago student-athletes were named to the Atlantic 10 Conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll as the league announced its honorees. In total the A-10 Conference had a record-breaking number of 3,953 student-athletes named to the list across its member institutions.
Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport at a full member institution must have a combined fall and spring semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year to be selected for the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Both freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award. In each of the last six years, the league honored over 3,000 student-athletes per year, while the 2022-23 season marks the fourth year in a row with more than 3,500 honorees.
The total surpasses the record set
in 2020-21 of 3,845 honorees. This year there were 327 student-athletes that achieved a 4.0 GPA, representing over eight percent of the total number of honorees nearly 22 student-athletes per school with perfect GPAs across the 15 member institutions.
Two-thirds (a remarkable 66 percent) of the honorees, equaling 2,609 student-athletes, recorded a 3.5 GPA or better for the 2022-23 academic year.
The honor comes after another standout season in the classroom for the Ramblers. In total, 87% (167) of Loyola Chicago student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or higher. The 167 student-athletes represent those named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in addition to student-athletes on the men's volleyball and women's golf programs which compete outside of the A-10 Conference. One hundred and twenty-nine Ramblers (67%) earned a 3.5 GPA or higher while 32 student-athletes finished the 2022-23 season with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The Loyola women's soccer team led all program this past season with a combined GPA of 3.70 while the men's cross country and track & field programs shared the men's honors with matching 3.67 grade point averages. Every Loyola athletic program finished the year with at least a 3.0 GPA, while all but two posted a combined team GPA of 3.4 or better.
The Ramblers also saw 51 student-athletes earn their degrees this past May, with six earning Summa Cum Laude honors (3.9-4.0 cumulative GPA). Fifteen Ramblers graduated with Magna Cum Laude (3.7-3.89) accolades while 12 more finished their degrees with Cum Laude (3.5-3.69) recognition.
