USTFCCCA Academic Honors Roll in for Loyola Chicago Track & Field

Clayton, Devaney named All-Academic Athletes

NEW ORLEANS (July 13, 2023) - The Loyola Chicago men's and women's track & field teams earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team honors Thursday afternoon. Jason Clayton and Chris Devaney collected individual honors and were tabbed All-Academic Athletes by the coaches association.

To qualify, teams must hold a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher for the 2022-23 academic year, while individuals needed a 3.25 cumulative GPA and must have participated in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

This last semester the Rambler men posted the department's highest spring GPA helping boost their cumulative GPA for the year to a 3.63. The Rambler women finished the 2022-23 academic year with a 3.59 cumulative GPA. This marks the 11th straight season the Loyola track & field squads brought home the team honor.

Clayton and Devaney are first-time honorees for the Maroon & Gold following stellar seasons on the track and in the classroom.

Clayton qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries for his second consecutive season after finding himself ranked 24th in the top-48 of the men's 1,500m. The Melbourne, Australia native took third in his first-round heat with a time of 3:44.51 to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.

In the classroom, Clayton also found success posting a 3.588 GPA over the last academic year. He is currently studying towards a degree in business.

Devaney entered the postseason ranked 27th in the men's 10k qualifying for the event's semifinal race. Earlier in the outdoor campaign, Devaney shattered a 31-year-old school record in the 10k with a time of 28:40.40. He shaved off 1:47 from his fastest time to take over the top spot on the all-time list. He was also part of a 10k event squad that was ranked 10th in the country on April 17 by the USTFCCCA.

While pursuing his master of science degree in finance, Devaney boasted a 3.809 GPA in the classroom.
