CLEVELAND (Sept. 1, 2023) –
Markus Maurer's last-second goal off a set piece from
Quinten Blair helped the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer earn a draw with defending Horizon League champions Cleveland State Friday evening on the road.
Marc Torrellas also scored in the 68
th minute as Loyola is now 1-0-1 on the season.
"I thought we did a lot of good things in first half with possession and creating some chances, we just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net," said Loyola head coach
Steve Bode. "But credit to our guys for the resilience to fight all the way to the end. That was huge,"
How it Happened
Before the chaos at the end of the match, one of Cleveland State's two first half shots found the back of the net in the 17
th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead on the Ramblers. Loyola sent off seven first frame shots, but none made it past CSU keepers Ryan Poling and Stephan Yerian.
Coming out of the halftime break, Maurer rocketed off an attempt on-target just two minutes into the half. Although the shot was saved, the attempt was the first of 13 in second half from LUC.
Despite Loyola keeping the pressure high, Cleveland State scored again in the 63
rd minute to go up 2-0 on the Ramblers.
Loyola Chicago quickly reset after the goal and, only five minutes later,
Marc Torrellas cut the deficit in half with an unassisted score in the 68
th minute, his first of the season.
From there, the Ramblers kept their foot on the gas in the waning moments of the contest. Loyola's back line didn't allow a single shot for the remainder of the match. Maurer, however, blasted off three in the last 10 minutes of the game.
With just a few ticks left on the clock, Maurer's attempts finally paid off as he scored the game-tying goal. After a CSU foul stopped the clock with four seconds left, Blair whipped the ball beautifully into the box off the set piece where Maurer received it with his head and scored at the horn. With the goal, Loyola left Cleveland with its first draw of the season.

Up Next
Loyola returns to Rogers Park for a home matchup against another Horizon League foe, Oakland, this Monday (Sept. 4). The Labor Day match is set to start at 10 a.m. CT on Hoyne Field.
"We'll carry this momentum of being resilient and being difficult to beat. This team talked about, in preseason, wanting to be blue collar, wanting to be very resilient and difficult to play against. We were that tonight, and I think we were rewarded in the end. We made it a little harder than we should have. But again, to their credit, they found a way and I think we're going to have to do the same thing on Monday. It's going to be a grind, and we have to dig deep again to get the result we want."
