CHICAGO (Sept. 4, 2023) – The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team celebrated Labor Day with a 1-0 win over Oakland Monday afternoon at Hoyne Field.
Petar Janjic's first career goal, a game-winner in the 75
th minute, propelled the Ramblers to victory.
"One of the things that we wanted to do was to get the ball in there half more. We wanted to possess more in their half and try to pin their defense back," said Loyola head coach
Steve Bode on his message to the team during halftime. "I think we kind of wore them down over time in the second half, and I think it was just a matter of time before were going to get chances and get one,"
How it Happened
With the Ramblers' high-octane offense in full effect under the baking sun at Loyola Soccer Park, LUC out-shot their foes for the third-straight match. Today, Loyola sent off 22 shots – eight in the first half and 14 in the second – while holding the Golden Grizzlies to just seven through the full 90.
Despite the numerous chances on-goal from the Ramblers, Loyola Chicago couldn't find the back of the net until the 75
th minute. Janjic found the ball in the box and delivered a beautiful strike between the posts to lift Loyola Chicago over Oakland.
With the lead in hand, LUC kept its foot on the accelerator, blasting off another seven shots before the final horn sounded. In the end, Loyola beat the heat and the Golden Grizzlies, 1-0, to remain undefeated.

"I think we're really trying to focus on ourselves as much as possible. We do scouting reports on the other team, learn what their tendencies are, but then once we know what that is, we focus on ourselves and try to be the sharpest, best version of ourselves. I think through video review, seeing what we're doing, working out, and training, we're going to keep getting better."
