Ramblers Post Largest Victory Since 2008 With 5-0 Win Over IUPUI

LUC builds momentum heading into league play this Saturday

INDIANPOLIS (Sept. 12, 2023) – A barrage of goals from the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team helped it claim a 5-0 victory over IUPUI Tuesday evening at Carrol Stadium. The win marked the team's largest margin of victory since 2008 as Loyola Chicago improved to 3-1-1 overall.

"The main thing you saw is we subbed a lot and played 20-plus guys," said head Loyola coach Steve Bode. "Winning 5-0 was a complete team effort and win. So, credit to the guys for doing that. We talked about wanting to get some momentum going into conference play and we did tonight for sure. So, it feels good,"

How it Happened
The LUC offensive attack began in the 21st minute when Andrew Schweinert broke the 0-0 tie with a goal – his first of the season – to the low left corner of the frame thanks to an assist from Oscar Dueso, his third "A" of the year.

Later in the 41st minute, Markus Maurer brought his goal season total to three after he sunk a penalty kick just before the halftime horn blew.

Coming out of the break, Loyola kept the ball in the attacking third and found the back of the net after its first shot of the final 45. Petar Janjic was to thank for making the Loyola lead 3-0 - he drilled a shot on-goal after a pass from teammate Julian Cisneros. Then, just 16 minutes later in the 73rd minute, the freshman scored for the second time. The assist was credited to fellow freshman Ethan Young, his first abet in a Rambler uniform.

Before the final whistle from head referee Race Williams sounded, Young got in on the fun as he scored in the 89th minute, making the score 5-0 as time expired. Jack McFeely, the third freshman of the evening to record a point, nabbed the assist, a career first for him as well.

"IUPUI has some great players, and they had a couple of chances in the first 20 minutes, including one that went off the post. They definitely created some things that made it difficult for us for sure. But our backline was stone solid and those were guys that subbed on that can take credit for that too. And then our goalkeepers - Crawford starting and then [Lucas] Daunhauer finishing the job. Again, a total team effort and a lot of guys contributed tonight,"

Notes
  • The Ramblers out-shot the Jaguars 12 (8) – 10 (4).
  • Keepers Aidan Crawford and Lucas Daunhauer combined for the team's third shutout of the year.
    • The pair also combined for four saves.
  • Schweinert's goal was his first of 2023.
  • Young, with his first career assist and goal, had three points on the evening.
  • Janjic had a game-high two goals and four points, both career-bests.
    • He also had a team-high three shots.
  • The 5-0 win was Loyola's largest margin of victory since beating Cleveland State, 5-0, on Sept. 28, 2008.
Up Next
Loyola is back in action this Saturday (Sept. 16) as it begins conference pay against George Washington on the road. Kick is set for 2 p.m. CT with the match streaming live on ESPN+.

"We feel like with A-10 play starting up, it's almost like a new season. We're not going to do anything different to prepare or be ready for it, but it's just kind of the way it works. We've got our non-conference season behind us, and now we're turning our focus to the A-10 and we'll prepare the best we can. We know how important conference games are to get points and to climb the ladder as quickly as possible. So, I'm excited for that and I know the guys are excited to get it going too, so should be a lot of fun."
