Ramblers Drop A-10 Opener to #23 Dayton

Addie Barnes led the way with 16 kills against the Flyers

CHICAGO – The Loyola Chicago women's volleyball team dropped its A-10 opener Friday evening, falling to No. 23 Dayton by a 3-1 margin inside Gentile Arena.

Addie Barnes led the way offensively with 16 kills while Karlie McNabb finished with 10 kills and 13 digs for the double-double. Bree Borum also notched a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs while chipping in eight kills.

Quoting Coach Berkley:
"I thought overall we played better than we did last weekend. I thought there were really good moments that we had. Dayton's a very good team and don't make a lot of errors and we knew that going in. We knew that we needed to eliminate errors and we didn't do that. Twenty-five hitting errors is too much but I'm proud of the team for fighting but we need to finish sets so we can take that fourth set and push it to five."

Dayton stormed out of the gate, leading wire-to-wire in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 victory. In the second set, Loyola used a pivotal 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead at the midway point. Emily Banitt led the charge during the run with a pair of kills. Dayton would pull within one at 20-19 and again at 21-20, but kills by Taylor Venuto and Banitt put the Ramblers up 23-20. Addie Barnes' kill gave Loyola set point at 24-21 and an ace by Banitt capped the 25-21 decision to even the match at 1-all.

The two teams were trading points early in the third set until Dayton used a 6-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. The Flyers would lead the rest of the way, picking up the 25-18 decision for a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, neither team was able to gain any separation until a quick 5-0 run by Loyola put the Ramblers up 22-19, with three-straight kills by Barnes forcing a Flyer timeout. The Ramblers would lead by a 23-21 margin but Dayton would go on to score the final four points of the match to seal the 25-23 victory.

The two teams will round out the weekend series Saturday afternoon, starting at 12:30 p.m.
