Multiple Career-Highs Broken in 4-1 Win Over Olivet Nazarene

Ramblers race past ONU Tuesday night at home

CHICAGO – Breaking from Atlantic 10 play briefly, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team defeated Olivet Nazarene, 4-1, Tuesday night at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers' four goals tied their season-high, having previously scored four in a win over Wright State on Sept. 5.

"I think it was a really good exercise tonight. Obviously, we played a lot of different guys, rotated the lineup, rested a lot of guys, but the fact that we were to get a 4-1 win, and a lot of guys got time and saw some very good performances, was big," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach Steve Bode. "I would say Arved [von Vegesack] being one of the top ones with the goal and two assists. I think tonight will only help the guys for this final stretch. So proud of the guys - three wins in a row now."

How it Happened
After taking a shot on-goal within the first minute of play, Daniel Firs kickstarted scoring with his first-career goal, scoring off Hugo Urdiales' corner kick in the 16th minute. Firs, a freshman making his third-career start, made perfect contact on the ball with his head to open scoring.

Following the goal, Loyola Chicago rattled off seven more shots, four of which were on-target, though the first half. Meanwhile, the Ramblers' backline limited the Tigers to just five total shots through the first 45 minutes of play. Just one of those shots needed keeper Alex Ortiz, who made his second-career start, to make a save.

Jamis Fite replaced Ortiz between the posts to start the second half, marking the redshirt junior's first appearance on the pitch as a Rambler.

ONU scored in the 70th minute to briefly level the score, 1-1, however, the Ramblers regained control not even a minute later. TJ Cairney fed a long ball up to a racing Arved von Vegesack along the sideline. The Stockholm native then fed Jack McFeely a cross who proceeded to blast the ball into the back of the net with gusto.

Then, three minutes later, the Ramblers made the score 3-1 as Angel Mendez scored in the 74th minute. Von Vegesack notched his second assist of the night, crossing the ball to Mendez before the goal.

None other than von Vegesack logged the Maroon and Gold's next goal, drawing a foul in the Tigers' penalty box in the 78th minute. The forward dug in and delivered a perfect strike past ONU's keeper, making the score 4-1 in favor of the 'Blers.
