How It Happened
Set One: Friday's action was a battle out of first serve until the Ramblers used a pair of 3-0 runs to pull ahead 11-6, forcing an early timeout by the Patriots. Cvitkovic sparked the first run, while Ajanovic's kill set the second one in motion. Loyola continued to heat up with back-to-back kills from Ajanovic and Remmes. Remmes went on to get a block and another kill to put the Ramblers up 16-11. The Ramblers lead didn't let up as Cvitkovic, DeBlieck, and Lovett registered kills to go up seven. Cvitkovic capped the set with two straight kills to win, 25-17.
Set Two: George Mason looked to swing momentum in its favor with two straight points to open the second. Borum put Loyola on her back with two kills to tie it quickly and teamed up with DeBlieck for a block and Loyola's first lead at 4-3. The Ramblers and Patriots continued to battle with nine more ties until Loyola gained some separation with a 4-0 run. A service error tied it 15-all, while Lovett and Ajanovic tallied kills for the 18-15 lead that forced a GMU timeout. The closest the Patriots could get was three down the stretch with two consecutive aces, 24-21, but Borum delivered the final blow to take a 2-0 edge in the match.
Set Three: Loyola opened the third on a 5-1 tear sparked by an Anjanovic ace that was followed by kills from Remmes and Cvitkovic. GMU cut the lead to two with a block assist from Larkin and Gacek. Ajanovic and Cvitkovic teamed up for another pair of Rambler points with an ace and kill, respectively, to keep the lead at three and force a timeout. DeBlieck and Lovett sandwiched a 3-0 run with kills for a five-point edge. The runs weren't over for the Ramblers as they put up 12 unanswered points on Lovett's serve to end the match. Cvitkovic had three more kills in the run, while
Kaitlyn Burke came off the bench to tally three of the final points. Ramblers won, 25-9.
