PITTSBURGH – Loyola Chicago tallied its fifth straight sweep Saturday afternoon with another 3-0 win over Duquesne to close a three-match week.
Marta Cvitkovic led Loyola with 10 kills, while
Bree Borum tallied her eighth straight double-double.
The Ramblers improve to 14-11 overall and 9-5 in A-10 play. They sit third in the league standings with two weekends of regular season action left to play.
"I am proud of the team for finishing the challenging travel week with three wins," said head coach
Amanda Berkley. "I thought Sam had a great weekend passing and defensively. She was steady the whole week. Bree had another solid weekend distributing the ball and being competitive. Ella did a good job coming in off the bench and providing energy, and she made some great plays. Overall, we're excited to get some rest and get ready for Fordham."
Cvitkovic finished the day with four digs and two blocks in addition to her match-high 10 kills.
Borum's eighth straight double-double came with 33 assists, 11 digs, seven kills, and two blocks.
Ella Ramsay capitalized on her start, tallying six kills, five blocks, and two digs. She hit .429.
Olivia Lovett (8),
Esma Ajanovic (7), and
Ann Marie Remmes (6) also had a solid day on the attack.
How It Happened
Set One: Loyola's dominance from Friday night carried right over to Saturday with back-to-back kills from Lovett and Remmes and an ace from Lovett to open 3-0. Cvitkovic and Borum got in on the action quickly making it 5-1. Loyola grew its lead to 10 on an ace from Ajanovic, 16-6. The Dukes three unanswered to cut the lead down to single-digits before Cvitkovic sparked a 6-1 finish to the set.
Kate Maley came off the bench to tally the final to kills, winning 25-13.
Set Two: The second set went back and forth to start with Emerson Schrom tallying a kill out of the gates for an early Dukes lead. Borum and Remmes strung two kills together for a 10-7 Loyola lead. Duquesne kept fighting, tying the set 12-all with the help of two attack errors and a Jordan Robertson kill. The Dukes tied it three more times before the Ramblers gained separation again with a 3-0 run sparked by a Lovett kill. Ramsay and Lovett teamed up down the stretch with four kills in the final five points to lead Loyola on another set win, 25-19.
Set Three: Loyola got off to a 9-2 run in the third with seven kills from five different Ramblers. It didn't halt the Dukes who got back within three with two kills and an ace, 9-6. The continued to fight, tying it 13-all with the help of a Loyola attack error. The Ramblers regained a small three-point gap with a kill from Lovett, but Duquesne took advantage of a pair of errors again to tie it, 19-19. The Ramblers didn't let the errors hurt them as they rallied to score six of the next seven points to claim the sweep. Borum and Cvitkovic killed the final two attacks to secure the win.
