Ramblers Begin Philly Road Trip at Saint Joseph's

First touch set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+

CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team heads to the City of Brother Love for a tilt with Saint Joseph's. First touch is set for tomorrow (Oct. 8) at Sean Sweeney Field. Coverage will be provided by ESPN+.

KICKING OFF
  • The Ramblers enter a two-game road stretch in Philadelphia, playing the Hawks tomorrow and La Salle Saturday.
  • The Maroon and Gold face the Hawks with just one loss in the last four games. Most recently, Loyola Chicago tied Fordham, 1-1, and downed Holy Cross College (Ind.), 2-0.
  • Arved von Vegesack found the net in consecutive games to spark Loyola Chicago's attack. The sophomore scored his first goal of the season in the win over Holy Cross (Ind.), then headed home the equalizer in the draw against Fordham.
  • After von Vegesack's goal against Holy Cross, Pinto put the result out of reach in the 90th minute, finishing a feed from Angel Mendez for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
  • Pinto, a freshman, has been a force for the Ramblers. He ranks third the Atlantic 10 in goals per game with .455.
  • Hugo Urdiales, who sits fourth in the conference in shots per game (2.73), has tallied two assists in as many games for LUC. He averages .273 assist per game, the eighth best mark in the A-10.
  • Alongside Urdiales with .273 assists per game as well are Jack McFeely and von Vegesack.
  • The Ramblers have sent off 146 shots so far in 2025. Only Fordham has more in the league with 151.
GLANCE AT SAINT JOSEPH'S
  • Head Coach Tim Mulqueen is in his first season with the Hawks and is 4-4-2 thus far.
  • Matteo Mazzotta has the second-most goals per game in the A-10 with .556 and the third-most points per game (1.22).
  • Glen Lala, an accurate shooter, has the third-most shots on goal per game in the A-10 with 1.10 while his .300 assists per game rank fifth-most.
  • Keeper Cooper Jennings' strong defense has limited opponents' opportunities, as he ranks last in the league in saves per game (0.618).
  • Most recently, SJU lost 1-0 at Davidson. Prior to that though, the Hawks beat Duquesne, 2-0, and Loyola Maryland, 3-1.
  • Mazzotta scored both goals for the Hawks in the win over the Dukes with Lala credited the assist on the second goal.
2025 NOTABLE NUMBERS AND NOTES
  • Hugo Urdiales, a 2024 All-Conference and CSC Academic All-District pick, started 13 matches and logged 987 minutes last season. A three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, he led Loyola in goals, shots and points, and was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Loyola was picked seventh in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. Defending champion Dayton topped the poll with eight first-place votes, followed by George Mason and Saint Louis. The Ramblers earned 91 points in the voting by the league's 13 head coaches.
  • The offseason featured plenty of activity. Grant Bailey, selected 86th overall by D.C. United in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, returns for another season with Loyola.
  • Former Ramblers Julian Cisneros and Marc Torrelles signed with FC Naples in USL League One, where they've impressed in their rookie campaigns.
  • The team also spent spring break in Italy, traveling to Milan, Lake Como, Parma and Rome while facing Serie D competition.
  • On the sidelines, assistant coach Ricardo Pinto returned to the staff, while former pro Kervin Kenton joined as an assistant as well.
  • This season marks the first without former A-10 member Massachusetts, which moved to the Mid-American Conference in July.
  • Loyola returns 17 players and seven starters responsible for 21 of its 24 goals last season, along with 59 of 72 points.
  • Head coach Steve Bode, entering his fourth year at the helm, has signed nine newcomers and owns a 26-16-18 career record with the Ramblers.
SERIES STUFF VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S
  • The Ramblers have never lost to the Hawks.
  • Loyola Chicago and Saint Joseph's met for the first time in 1997 when LUC routed SJU, 4-0 at home.
  • The teams last met on Nov. 2, 2024, when Loyola earned a 4-1 home victory over the Hawks.
  • The Ramblers sent off 25 shots, a season-high, with nine landing on-target. Urdiales had a match-high five.
  • Ben Bischof (20', 21'), Hugo Urdiales (48'), and Matthew Andrusko (first career goal) all scored on Senior Day.
