Wichita State Stuns Loyola on the Road

WICHITA – Loyola Chicago dropped its first road contest at Wichita State Thursday night, 95-74. Deywilk Tavarez led the Ramblers with 16 points on 5-9 from three-point range.

With the loss, Loyola falls to 1-3 overall.

"We clearly didn't execute our game plan tonight. Tonight wasn't great," said head coach Drew Valentine. "Our team needs to have more urgency. Hopefully, this is a wakeup call, and we remember who we play for and what Loyola represents."

How It Happened
Loyola opened the first going 3-for-3 from the field as Tavarez hit two threes. The Ramblers built an early 8-5 lead before the Shockers tie it up with a three-point play. Wichita State gained momentum with a 14-3 run. The Shockers drained two threes on Rambler turnovers in that stretch that put the up 25-12 for the first double-digit lead of the game. The lead grew to 15 by the 12-minute media timeout.

The Ramblers used a stretch at the free throw line, sinking six straight, and a big three from Kymany Houinsou to battle back and cut the Shocker lead to 10. Nic Anderson got it to single-digits at the line, but the Ramblers lost steam as the Shockers used a 9-0 run to pull away again and take their largest lead at 18 with 2:31 to go. Miles Rubin had an alley-oop feed, while Tavarez drained a buzzer beater three going into the break. Wichita State led, 50-36.

Loyola found a spark to open the second with three straight threes. Tavarez went for a four-point play, while Chuck Love III hit back-to-back and cut the lead down to seven, 55-48. The Shockers quickly stopped Loyola's efforts with a 15-0 run. Will Berg had four straight points, while Kenyon Giles hit two threes forcing a Loyola timeout midway through the run. The lead got to 22 before Kayde Dotson broke up the run.

Despite glimpses of Rambler offense in the final half of the second, the Shockers stayed hot, building their lead to 28 at the 2:10 mark. Loyola scored the final seven points of the game, and Wichita State came away with the win, 95-74.
