Ramblers Earn First Red Line Rivalry Win Since 2015, Top DePaul 61-49

Ramblers snap nine-game red line rivalry drought, hit season firsts in 61-49 win over DePaul

CHICAGO - Loyola Chicago snapped a five-game skid and earned its first Red Line Rivalry victory in nearly a decade Wednesday morning, defeating DePaul 61-49 at Wintrust Arena. The win marked the Ramblers' first in the city rivalry since Dec. 21, 2015.

"Could not be more proud of these women for the gut check they had over the last couple of practices," said Loyola Chicago Head Coach Allsion Guth.  We drew a lot of inspiration from our women's volleyball team's A-10 Championship, and you could see it in today's game. We executed the little things, outrebounded DePaul 38–29, and held them to their lowest points in the paint all season. We also limited our threes to nine, worked through a shooting rut, and still managed to shoot 45-percent from the field. It was a total team effort, and credit to these women for grinding out the win."

How it Happened
Loyola (2-5) opened the game with a strong start, using a 9-3 run to take a 9-5 lead into the first media timeout while forcing three early turnovers. The Ramblers' defense smothered DePaul throughout the first quarter, holding the Blue Demons to just 2-of-13 from the field and 1-of-4 from three to build a 16-5 advantage.

DePaul (2-5) responded in the second quarter. The Blue Demons forced seven Loyola turnovers in the frame and shot 7-of-15 from the floor, closing the half on a 10-0 run to pull within one at 24-23.

Loyola regrouped quickly after halftime, opening the third quarter with back-to-back layups from Brooklyn Vaughn and Alex-Anne Bessette to extend the lead to 28-23 and prompting an early DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons later tied the game at 32, but Audrey Deptula delivered a momentum-shifting sequence, knocking down a clutch 3-pointer before the buzzer to send the Ramblers into the fourth quarter ahead 38-34.

Loyola built on that advantage midway through the final period, using a 9-4 run to take a 54-47 lead with 3:30 remaining. From there, the Ramblers controlled the final minutes, converting at the free-throw line and getting timely defensive stops to ice the game.
