Game Recap: Softball |

Loyola Chicago Falls on Day One in Oregon

Doubleheader highlighted by Alli Pawlowicz' homer.

EUGENE, Ore. – Loyola Chicago softball (2-13, 0-0 A-10) dropped both games on the first day of the Oregon Classic on Friday, Feb. 28, falling 9-1 to San Diego after five innings before an 11-7 loss to Portland State, despite leading for most of the game.

Game One: Loyola 1, San Diego 9

The Toreros set the tone early, launching two home runs in the first inning and tacking on three more runs in the second thanks to the Ramblers' miscues and aggressive base-running. After a four-run third inning, San Diego extended its lead, 9-0.

Loyola managed its lone run in the fifth with Riley Owens driving in Skyler Croker on a fielder's choice to the pitcher. It wasn't enough to contain the Toreros who held the Ramblers to three hits. Starting pitcher Peyton Pepkowski was tagged for five runs over 1.2 innings pitched before Maddy Hickey and Andi Broniewicz came in for relief.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sierra Sass accounted for two of the three hits, while freshman Addyson Borg had the other.
  • Broniewicz tossed a scoreless fourth inning with zero errors.

Game Two: Loyola 7, Portland State 11

The Ramblers showed resilience against the Vikings, coming back to take a 4-2 lead in the third inning, fueled by a two-run single from Bella Crimaldi and an RBI bunt single from Katie Mitchell. Loyola extended its lead in the fourth, 5-2, after freshmen pair Kayci Rigby drove in Averi Vander Woude on a groundout.

Portland State responded with a three-run sixth inning to tie the game, 5-5, then exploded with six runs in the seventh frame. Alli Pawlowicz, another rookie, provided a bright spot for Loyola, crushing an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the sixth. Despite their early early and late push, the Ramblers fell short, 11-7, to the Vikings.

In the circle, Broniewicz pitched four solid innings, allowing only two earned runs. Pepkowski and Hickey struggled with relief, tagging nine combined runs, only five earned.

Inside the Box Score

  • Crimaldi added two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
  • Haley Wallace also added two hits and recorded one run while Sass also added a run and a stolen base.
  • Pawlowicz recorded the first home run of her career.
