ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Loyola Chicago (12-24, 7-5 A-10) held off a late push from St. Bonaventure to secure a 4-3 win and complete the weekend series sweep on Sunday, April 6 at Joyce Field. With the victory, the Ramblers are on an eight-game winning streak.
"It's always great to walk away from the weekend with a sweep and today is no exception. Pep [
Peyton Pepkowski] and Andie [Broniewicz] had great weekends on the mound, our hitters put a ton of hits on the board, and we did enough defensively to get the three wins. It's great momentum to bring us into the tough competition in the week ahead," said head coach
Alicia Abbott.
How It Happened
Loyola capitalized on early miscues by St. Bonaventure, plating three unearned runs in the top of the first inning.
Haley Wallace drove in the game's first run with an RBI single and later scored on a throwing error from the catcher. Another miscue allowed
Nat Lesnicki to come home, giving the Ramblers a 3-0 lead before the Bonnies recorded their third out. St. Bonaventure chipped away in the third frame, closing the deficit to 3-2 on after an RBI double and a groundout that brought in a second unearned run. However, Loyola responded in the fifth after
Bella Crimaldi delivered an RBI single and send Wallace home to extend the lead, 4-2.
Despite a solo homer from the Bonnies to bring them within one, Ramblers' starting pitcher
Peyton Pepkowski (6-16) beared down in the seventh, stranding the tying run after a hit-by-pitch to seal the complete-game win. Pepkowski allowed just three hits and one earned run while retiring eight batters in a gritty 115-pitch performance.
