CHICAGO – In the regular season finale, Loyola Chicago (19-32, 14-12 A-10) fell, 3-0, to George Washington on Sunday, May 4. The Ramblers finished sixth overall in the Atlantic 10 standings and claimed the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament in Washington, D.C. next week.
"The mindset heading into the tournament is, 'how do we use our strengths and other teams' weaknesses to capitalize on scoring as many runs as we can and giving up as few runs as possible? What's really nice about the league right now is we're in a place where just about anybody can take it," said head coach
Alicia Abbott. "I think that sets us up well, even despite having to play on Wednesday, excited to go out and just show up with everything we've got."
How It Happened
George Washington struck early and held off Loyola behind a combined three-pitcher shutout. The Revolutionaries opened the scoring in the top of the first inning thanks to an out-of-the park two-run homer. Later in the game, George Washington added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
The Ramblers had early opportunities but couldn't capitalize, stranding seven runners over the first four innings. Despite out hitting George Washington 6-4, Loyola struggled to get on base and move runners into scoring position in the final frames. Senior
Andie Broniewicz (9-10) took the loss for the Ramblers, allowing two runs over and two hits through 3.1 innings while retiring two batters.
Peyton Pepkowski, another senior, provided a solid 3.2 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing zero earned runs.
