Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Ramblers Fall at DePaul, 2-1

CHICAGO – The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 2-1 to DePaul at Wish Field. Antonio Pinto scored for the Ramblers', but DePaul held on to win the Red Line Rivalry and remain undefeated.

"I thought we started the game really well," said Loyola Heacd Coach Steve Bode. "In the first 15 minutes we came out strong and even created a good chance for Hugo [Urdiales] that went just over the bar. If that goes in, the momentum in a rivalry game like this is completely different. Instead, we didn't capitalize, and on the other end they get a long throw — something they're very dangerous on — and we didn't deal with it. They score, and the momentum shifts right away despite our strong start."

How it Happened
Loyola's (1-1-3, 0-0 A-10) first chance came early in the 6th minute when Petar Janjic tried from the far right side of the goal. The captain's shot was blocked, but the Ramblers were awarded their first corner for the effort.

The Blue Demons answered in the 17th minute, breaking the 0-0 deadlock when Christian Baumgartner found the back of the net with his right foot. Not long after, DePaul widened the gap to a 2-0 affair in the 22nd minute.

After halftime, Ameer Abdullah and Hugo Urdiales created scoring opportunities for Loyola. Urdiales nearly broke through in the 57th minute, forcing a leaping one-handed save from the DePaul goalkeeper.

Just moments later, Luka Ivancic and Arved von Vegesack set up Antonio Pinto with a prime chance in front of goal. Pinto converted with a diving right-footed finish—his third of the season—to pull Loyola within one of DePaul.

In the final 10 minutes, Gabe Velasco made a stellar one-on-one save to keep Loyola within striking distance.

In the 44th minute, Petar Janjic drew a foul about 30 yards from goal, setting up an Urdiales free kick. His strike was on-target, but the DePaul keeper handled the save.

Game Notes
  • Velasco logged four saves, facing 13 shots (six on-goal).
  • Pinto scored his third goal of the season. He leads the team in points with six.
  • Loyola totaled 11 shots (five on-goal) through the 90 minutes of play.
  • Urdiales led the way with a game-high three shots. All but one was on-target.
