ST. GEORGE, Utah — At their spring break tournament, the Loyola Chicago women's golf team ended in sixth place at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational. The Ramblers' finish was the best of their spring season so far, and included four players ending up in the top 30.
Loyola ended with a team score of 53-over-par (+16,+15,+22), which is their best 54-hole score since their performance at the Velvet Classic during the fall season. Weber State won the team title at the tournament with a final score of two-over-par, while Wyoming's Kiley Reisner claimed the individual title in a playoff with a score of two-under-par.
"I was really happy with our first two rounds and our position heading into the final round," said head coach
Brandy Johnston. "We had some great individual rounds this week. One player under par, plus a couple other rounds under 75, but we need to improve our consistency if we want to be more successful as a group."
For the second straight tournament, the Ramblers were led by freshman
Teagan Connors, who ended the Thunderbird Invitational in a tie for 16th place with a score of +9. Connors' 54-hole score was a career-best, and her seven birdies were tied for the team lead with
Cassie Psuik this weekend.
"The play of
Teagan Connors has been the highlight of the past two tournaments," said Johnston. "She posted a new 54-hole career best score in Arizona and then beat it again this week. Her career as a Rambler is off to a very promising start."
Another high point of the weekend for the Ramblers was the first-round performance of sophomore
Madison Haugen, who finished the first round in a tie for second place thanks to a career-best round of one-under-par. Haugen ended the tournament at +15, which landed her in a tie for 26th place with fellow sophomore
Grace Hui.
In addition, junior
Cassie Psuik ended in a tie for 23rd with a score of +14, making her the second-highest finisher for the Ramblers, and
Grace Durkin finished in a tie for 56th with a score of +36.
The Ramblers' next event will be the Nashville Invitational. The tournament will be hosted by Lipscomb and will be held in Nashville, Tennessee March 23-24.
