No. 2-seeded Loyola Chicago hosts 6-seeded Lewis in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
QUICK HITS
- The Ramblers currently rank 10th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll and are fifth in the Division I Men's Volleyball RPI Rankings.
- Four Ramblers met double-digit kills in Loyola's 3-1 quarterfinals victory over Purdue Fort Wayne (April 18): Josh Schellinger (14), Daniel Fabikovic (13), Bryce Robbins (13) and Aidan Klein (12). Fabikovic matched his career-high nine digs, and Klein had the match-high seven blocks to lead defensively.
- Five Ramblers earned All-MIVA accolades; Schellinger, Fabikovic and Klein earned First Team honors while senior Ryan McElligott and freshman Oskar Berg Mikkelsen were named to the Second Team. Fabikovic made his third straight appearance on the First Team and Klein marked the first all-conference selection of his career.
- Klein paces the MIVA with a .515 hitting clip and ranks third in blocks (1.04/set). He's also top 25 in service aces (15th), points (20th) and kills (24th). Klein leads Loyola at the net with 86.0 total blocks and from the service line with 25 aces.
- As a unit, the Ramblers rank second in the MIVA in hitting percentage (.326), points (16.63/set), kills (12.69/set) and assists (11.96/set), and are third in blocks (2.31/set) and fifth in service aces (1.64/set). Nationally, Loyola is fifth in assists and kills per set, ninth in hitting percentage and 11th in aces per set.
- Head coach Shane Davis marked 300 career wins earlier this season after a sweep against Ball State (March 5).
- Men's volleyball celebrates its 30th anniversary this season after Loyola added the program in 1996. The team is home to two of the university's three national championships and has never had a losing season.
SCOUTING REPORT
The Flyers finished the regular season 17-13 overall and 8-8 in league play. As a unit, Lewis ranks first in blocks (2.48/set) and opponent hitting percentage (.239), and is third in service aces (1.65/set) and digs (8.53/set). Senior libero Nico Paula and redshirt sophomore setter/outside Cameron Hoying tabbed All-MIVA First Team while senior outside hitter Daniel Haber earned a second team nod. The Flyers upset a 3-seed Lindenwood to advance to the semifinals.
SERIES HISTORY
Loyola holds the all-time series advantage 39-36 with Lewis. The Ramblers beat the Flyers in both meetings this season (Feb. 12, March 26). Almost exactly one year ago, Loyola and Lewis met in Gentile Arena for the MIVA Tournament semifinals; the Ramblers swept the Flyers in straight sets then went on to win the championship.
