OMAHA, Neb. – Loyola Chicago opened the Jesuit Invitational with a 3-2 win over Santa Clara Friday afternoon. The Ramblers went up by two in the first half before the Broncos rallied to tie it.
Arved von Vegesack put away the game winner in the 75
th minute for Loyola.
With the win, Loyola improves to 3-0-2 overall.
"I'm really excited for the guys to beat a team of high quality in some really tough conditions," said head coach
Kevin Robson. "It was a total team effort from every guy on the roster. This is a great event that Creighton is hosting, and I'm really glad we were able to find a win for our alumni and fans here in Omaha."
How It Happened
It was a slow start for both squads Friday and took nearly 18 minutes before the Ramblers put the first shot on goal, but their next two attempts on target found the back of the net.
Luka Ivancic scored unassisted at the 30:54 mark and just over a minute later
Mateusz Drazek put Loyola up 2-0. He was assisted by Vegesack in the 32
nd minute, and the lead would hold at halftime.
The Broncos woke up in the second, scoring two goals within a six-minute stretch. They knotted the game in the 74
th minute, but Vegesack needed less than 45 seconds to put the Ramblers back up. He scored in the 75
th minute on an assist from Drazek for a 3-2 edge. Santa Clara put one more shot on goal, but Loyola held on to win.
