FAIRBORN, Ohio - Michelle Sarmiento scored two goals and Carlin Lucente recorded two assists to help host Wright State slip past Loyola, 2-1, in a Horizon League thriller that ended in double overtime. With the win, WSU improves to 10-4-3 (3-1-2 HL), while LU falls to 6-9-1 (1-5 HL) on the season.
Sarmiento scored her first goal off a Lucente corner kick in the 21st minute to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. WSU held its advantage throughout the second half until junior forward Mary Dale (Freeport, Ill.) tallied the match-equalizing goal off a corner kick in the 85th minute, sending the match into overtime. Senior defender Jamie Wasielewski (Joliet, Ill.) and sophomore midfielder Heather Lau (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) produced assists on the score for Loyola.
After the first overtime went scoreless, Sarmiento beat the clock with the match-winning score at the 109:55 mark with a header off another Lucente assist on a corner kick for Wright State.
The Raiders posted a 17-8 shooting advantage over the Ramblers and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Sophomores Amy Lomas (Lake Zurich, Ill.) and Laura Heidenreich (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded two shots apiece, while junior goalkeeper Emily Peick (Mendota Height, Minn.) stopped a match-high five shots for LU. Kim Chianese led WSU with a match-best five shots and Steph Comisar only recorded one save in goal.
"This loss was tough to swallow as one single play at any minute can change the pace of a match," said Ramblers head coach Frank Mateus. "We created some good scoring opportunities in the second half and managed to score near the end of regulation to send it into overtime."
Loyola welcomes Cleveland State to LU Soccer Park for its Horizon League finale on Friday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. Senior Megan McDonald and Wasielewski will be honored in a Senior Day celebration before the beginning of the match.
