DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman forward Alex Jones (Downers Grove, Ill.) second goal in the last two matches led the Loyola men's soccer team to its first win of the season, a 1-0 shutout of Charlotte Friday night at Alumni Stadium on the Davidson College campus. Loyola improves to 1-2 this season while Charlotte now stands 1-1-1.

"It was a great overall team effort," second-year head coach Brendan Eitz said.

After the two teams traded scoring chances throughout the match, Jones finally capitalized on an opportunity when a service was launched into the box about 25 minutes into the second half. Jones gained possession of the ball six yards in front of the net and drilled a shot past the Charlotte goalkeeper into the top right corner for his second-career goal 70:30 into the match.

"We showed a lot of composure and confidence after that score," Eitz said. "What impressed me the most was how the team responded to having the lead and kept playing hard."

The Ramblers showed their composure and confidence by keeping the pressure on the 49er defense. Junior forward Keum Sung Kim (Arlington Heights, Ill.) had a shot on goal hit the crossbar just 10 minutes later.

In his first start of the season, senior goalkeeper Sean Bond (Dallas, Texas) stopped all four Charlotte shots on goal for his second-career shutout.

"Sean came in and did a tremendous job for us," Eitz said. "He made some tremendous saves that we needed to have in a close match like this."

Loyola hopes for another complete team effort on Sunday when it faces the host of the Davidson Adidas Classic, Davidson College, at noon in Alumni Stadium.
