CHICAGO - The No. 10 Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team earned its third consecutive sweep, and sixth of the season, after sweeping Quincy 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-15) on Saturday in Alumni Gym.
Loyola (11-3, 3-2 MIVA) had three players reach double-figures in kills, led by junior opposite hitter Ian Anderson. The Wauwatosa, Wis. native posted 15 kills on 21 attempts for a season-high .667 hitting percentage. Anderson added six digs and two blocks.
Middle blocker James Grunst and outside hitter Joe Guntli registered 10 blocks apiece. Grunst entered this weekend ranked fourth in the nation with a .527 hitting percentage and will surely improve that mark after converting his 10 kills on only 11 attempts for a match-high .909 percentage.
The Rambler attack was set up throughout the night by Brian Guntli, who led the match with 46 assists. Guntli now has 701 assists this season and 4,535 in his career and now trails Shane Davis by only 702 for the school record. He also tied his career-high with five blocks.
Loyola took the match in impressive fashion and with the exception of thee ties early in the second and third games led the entire way. The Ramblers jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first game behind three quick kills by Anderson and never looked back. Anderson, Grunst and Nick Lamoureux each had a game-high four kills to start the match.
With a 10-7 lead early in the second game, Loyola used a 7-3 run to take command of the game. Anderson tallied nine kills on 10 attempts along with three digs. Thanks to two kills by Lamoureux, the Ramblers quickly grabbed a 10-5 lead early in game three. Ahead 13-8, Loyola used a 5-1 lead to assume an 18-9 advantage it would never lose. Lamoureux and Joe Guntli led with five blocks apiece.
Zach Bailey led Loyola's back effort with 13 digs while Grunst (3), Anderson (2) and Lamoureux (2) all had multiple blocks.
Patrick Reidy and Ed Ryan led Quincy with five kills apiece while setter Eric Wooldridge had 20 assists. All three players also tied for the team-high with two blocks apeice.
The Ramblers continue Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 against Ball State in Muncie, Ind.
