CHICAGO - Milwaukee (4-6-5, 1-3-2 HL) capitalized on a free kick in the 77th minute, which proved to be enough to hold off Loyola, 1-0 Saturday night at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers fall to 8-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Horizon League play, suffering their second straight loss for just the first time all season.
Loyola outshot the Panthers 8-2 in the first half, with four shots on goal that nearly got past UWM goalkeeper Ryan Germann, including a blast from junior Eric Gehrig from 10 yards out. Milwaukee's two shots of the first period were on goal and from very close range, requiring senior Brian Byrne to make some stellar stops.
The Ramblers again outshot Milwaukee in the second half, 11-5, but just could not find the back of the net. The Panthers finally broke the scoreless tie at the 76:50 mark, when Eric Frazier nailed a free kick that deflected off the outreached hand of senior goalkeeper Brad Sommer.
Loyola produced several opportunities for itself to even the match as time ran down, including two shots by freshman Erik Warren from inside the box in the final minute, but the Milwaukee defense held on for the 1-0 victory. Junior Michael Ferguson led the way with six shots, including two on goal and Gehrig had five shots of his own.
Loyola continues League play next Friday, Oct. 24 at Butler. Kick-off is set for 12:30 pm CT.
