Final Stats

CHICAGO - Visiting Valparaiso hit .395 for the match en route to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) sweep of Loyola tonight at Alumni Gym. Loyola drops to 17-9 (6-7 Horizon) with its second straight loss while Valpo remains in the hunt for the regular season title with its ninth straight win, improving to 20-6 (10-4).

"I give credit to Valpo tonight," said head coach Marcie Wolbeck. "They came out ready to play and we did not match their intensity. We need to regroup a little bit and come out ready to go tomorrow against Butler."

Kills from Dana VanDiggelen, Mallory Curran and Katie Johnson highlighted an early 5-0 run that gave Loyola an early 8-5 lead in the opening set. Valpo responded by scoring the next four points to regain the lead and the spurt was part of a larger 10-3 run that gave the Crusaders a 15-11 lead. Loyola managed to trade points for a stretch but the Ramblers struggled to string points together and a service error gave VU a 25-18 win. Loyola hit a terrific .346 in the frame but Valpo bettered that mark, hitting a sizzling .520 (14-1-25) in the set.

Two Colleen Francis kills helped Loyola grab a 10-9 and the teams traded points to 12-all before Valpo took control. A Rambler service error gave the Crusaders the ball and Allison Sears served up eight straight points to give the visitors a commanding 21-12 lead and they cruised from there, closing it out courtesy of another Rambler service error.

Loyola struggles continued in the third set, as the Ramblers dug themselves an early 7-1 hole. Two Lauren Ditscheit service aces helped LU pull within a pair (7-5) but Sears fired two aces of her own in a 4-0 VU run that built the lead back up to seven and the Ramblers would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

After posting the .346 clip in the opening frame, Loyola hit just .016 (16-15-63) the rest of the match.

Johnson led the way with 10 kills and no other Rambler had more than five. Angie Porche had 10 kills to lead Valpo.

Loyola looks to rebound tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Butler at 4 p.m.
