CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team earned its fourth tie of the season on Wednesday night (Oct. 14), playing DePaul to a 2-2 draw at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers (3-4-4) carried a 2-1 lead into the 89th minute before the Blue Demons (7-5-1) evened the score, forcing overtime.
"Right now we're a good team, but we need to execute and be able to finish," said Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz. "We just let (DePaul) hang out, and you can't let a team like this do that."
DePaul's Nathan Feltz scored the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute, blasting a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right hand corner of the net for the score.
Loyola answered less than a minute later when a failed attempt to clear the ball out of DePaul's zone by goalkeeper Joe Ferrari resulted in an excellent opportunity for the Ramblers inside the Blue Demons' six-yard box. Senior Eric Gehrig capitalized, sending the rebound to past Ferrari for the Ramblers' first goal of the match.
Loyola took the lead 15 minutes into the second half when senior Michael Ferguson dribbled past multiple DePaul defenders before firing a shot from 20 yards out to the back of the net for the score.
Alex Mangan scored for DePaul in the closing minutes of regulation time, receiving a cross from Feltz and heading it past freshman goalkeeper Christian Krueger to tie the match at two. Krueger finished the match with one save in his first career start.
The teams exchanged good scoring chances in the two overtime periods, but the extra time was not enough to decide a winner between the two teams.
The Ramblers return to Loyola Soccer Park this Saturday (Oct. 17) to host Horizon League foe Wright State at 7 p.m. CT.
