YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Freshman Ana Claudia Michelini scored late in the first half to lead the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team over Youngstown State, 1-0, on Friday night (Oct. 2). The Ramblers move to 3-9-1 (2-2-1 Horizon League) with the win, while the Penguins fall to 3-5-2 (0-1-0).
Michelini capitalized in the 42nd minute on a rebound that bounced out in front of the goal, sending it past Youngstown State goalkeeper Mariah Snyder for the lone tally of the contest.
"Any win, especially a win on the road, is a big win for us," said Loyola head coach Frank Mateus. "Give Youngstown State credit, they kept fighting, but we were just able to hang on for the win."
Loyola out shot Youngstown State, 9-5, including a 7-1 margin in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Groesch held the Penguins scoreless for her fourth shutout of the season.
"It was good to get the win, especially after our slow start," said Mateus. "We'll look to keep it going on Sunday and have a strong day of training tomorrow to prepare for Cleveland State."
The Ramblers take on the Vikings in Cleveland this Sunday (Oct. 4) at 12 p.m. CT.
