IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team scored its first goal of the season, but fell to Iowa, 4-1, on Friday night (Sept. 11). Iowa scored three goals within 15 minutes in the second half put the Ramblers away. Loyola drops to 0-7-0 after the loss, while Iowa moves to 4-2-0.
"I was happy with the way that we came back from being down one to score," said Loyola head coach Frank Mateus. "We had good momentum in the first half but just came out flat in the second. Iowa was extremely aggressive and we just didn't play as physically as we needed to."
Iowa entered the scoring column first, tallying in the 17th minute. Alyscha Mottershead scored on a shot from inside the six-yard box after receiving a pass from Mandy Heimann.
Loyola struck 18 minutes later, with freshman Courtney Hurley scoring the first Rambler goal of the 2009 season. Junior Lauren Papierski fed Hurley with a cross to the right side to set up the goal.
"That was a great goal by Hurley," said Mateus. "It was a really nice goal, and it came off of one of our better chances in the game."
The Rambler defense held the Hawkeyes without a goal until over 20 minutes into the second half, but Mottershead's second goal of the night and two goals from Keli McLaughlin over a 15-minute span gave Iowa the lead for good.
Loyola will look to rebound against Northern Illinois this Sunday (Sept. 13) in DeKalb, Ill. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. CT.
