CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State scored the lone goal of the match with just over a minute left in regulation to sneak past the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team, 1-0, on Friday night (Sept. 25). Justin Mancine took a pass from Slavisa Ubiparipovic at the top of the box, firing a shot to the bottom-right corner of the net for the goal.
The Ramblers (3-2-1, 0-1-0) and Vikings (3-3-1, 1-0-0) were deadlocked in a defensive battle for the first 88 minutes of the match before Mancine's game winner, combining for only 20 total shots for the match.
"We have been creating a lot of chances the last couple of games, but in the end we need to finish them," said Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz. "CSU is a great team. I think they'll win a lot of games this year."
Senior Mark Halma had possibly Loyola's best chance of the first half, sending a header wide of the net. Cleveland State also had a solid scoring chance in the first, with Mancine sending a shot off the post early on. A physical second frame followed, with the teams combining for more fouls (10) than shots (7).
Loyola did out shoot CSU, but five saves by Nick Harpel kept LU out of the scoring column. Sophomore Peter McKeown had one save in the loss.
The Ramblers travel to take on Valparaiso this Sunday (Sept. 27) at 4 p.m. CT.
