CHICAGO -
An inspired Loyola University Chicago (14-12, 5-10 Horizon) squad dominated visiting Green Bay (12-14, 6-8 Horizon) on the glass and received 70 points from its starting five en route to a 79-62 victory this afternoon at the Gentile Center. The win puts an end to a four-game winless streak for the Ramblers, who out-rebounded the Phoenix, 49-28, and assures them of at least a .500 finish at home for the seventh straight season.
After getting off to sluggish starts the last few games, Loyola set the tone early, getting out to a 14-8 lead as Ben Averkamp tallied six of the Ramblers' first 14 points. Green Bay cut the Loyola lead to two (18-16) with 6:43 left in the half before the Ramblers reeled off a 14-4 run over the next four and a half minutes to open up a 32-20 advantage, with Averkamp again accounting for a half dozen points during that spurt.
A quick basket by Rahmon Fletcher to open the second half cut Loyola's lead down to nine, but a three-pointer by Geoff McCammon, followed by two more by Terrance Hill extended the Ramblers' lead to 44-26 and Green Bay would get no closer than 13 points the remainder of the way.
Employing its 11th lineup this season, and fourth in as many games, Loyola got impressive production from its starting cast. McCammon tallied a game-high 22 points in his first start since Jan. 8, hitting 5-of-10 shots from behind the arc along the way. Averkamp recorded his second double-double of the season by contributing 18 points and 10 boards to go along with three assists, two blocks and a steal, as he ran his string of consecutive games with double-figure points to nine.
Hill chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds, while Andy Polka notched eight points and eight rebounds for Loyola.
Greg LeSage came off the bench to pour in a team-best 12 points for Green Bay.
Loyola is back in action when it visits city and Horizon League rival UIC on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. That contest will be carried on ESPN3.com.
