CHICAGO - The intracity rivalry between Loyola University Chicago and DePaul continued on Tuesday afternoon as the Ramblers suffered a 2-1 loss to the Blue Demons. Loyola led 1-0 at the half, but two late goals gave DePaul the comeback victory.
The teams split possession at the start of the game, eager to claim rights to the first goal. Brothers James and Ryan Howe created chances up top for the Ramblers, putting the first four shots on the board.
Ryan Howe had the first opportunity of the day in the opening minutes, taking a free kick and sending the ball into the hands of DePaul goalkeeper Eric Sorby. In the 39th minute, Howe was back in the mix, taking another free kick to set up two back-to-back shots by sophomore Brian Bement and Andrew Raymonds with Sorby making the saves.
It was James Howe who scored the first goal, taking a penalty kick in the 40th minute to give Loyola the lead 1-0. DePaul looked to equalize with only 15 seconds left in the half, taking a free kick just outside the 18. Senior goalkeeper Peter McKeown made a great save, sending Loyola into the break with the lead for the first time this season.
After the intermission, a call in the box in the 54th minute allowed DePaul to equalize as Antonio Aguilar took a penalty kick, tying the game 1-1. The Ramblers fought back, looking to take control of the game, but it was not to be as DePaul took the lead in the 81st minute after bringing McKeown out of the box on a prior save.
With the Ramblers trailing 2-1, freshman Dane Bergstrom was quick on the restart, dribbling the ball down the field and crossing it to Raymonds who sent a header high of the goal. In the final minute, James Howe created a last chance for Loyola, shooting the ball high just outside of the 18. The loss brings the Ramblers to a 0-4-0 overall record.
The Ramblers continue play this Friday, Sept. 14 when they host IPFW at Loyola Soccer Park. The game starts at 5 p.m. with the Loyola women's soccer team playing immediately following at 7:30 p.m.
