CHICAGO - Junior goalkeeper Monica Gonyo earned the 14th shutout of her career today, making seven saves, as the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team played to a nil-nil draw with the Indiana Hoosiers in double overtime this afternoon in the 2013 home opener.

"I'm proud of the girls for not giving up a goal," commented Loyola head women's soccer coach Barry Bimbi. "Monica (Gonyo) was fantastic in goal and our back line never really let anyone behind them. We face a pair of quality opponents in Colorado College and St. Mary's at the Marquette Invitational this coming weekend and hope to show well there."

Indiana would register the first scoring opportunity of the game on a hot day in Rogers Park. Kayleigh Steigerwalt blasted a shot that rung off Gonyo's crossbar before being cleared by the Rambler defense. The Hoosiers continued to attack at the Loyola end with their best opportunity falling to Rebecca Candler as she sent a shot from point-blank range over the bar. Loyola's backline defended valiantly and frustrated Indiana as the first half came to a close.

The start of the second half would continue to see Indiana push forward in search of the game's first goal. Candler threatened again in the 69th minute for the Hoosiers, hitting the crossbar from inside the 18-yard box. Loyola's first shot on goal did not come until the closing stages of the second half but it proved to be the best opportunity for either side. Gonyo sent a ball into the box following an Indiana foul that her sister, Valerie Gonyo, headed towards goal but Indiana netminder Shannon Flower was up to the task and made a fine save to keep the game scoreless.

Loyola headed into extra time in search of its second consecutive overtime victory in front of a boisterous home crowd at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers held the advantage in shots on goal by a tally of 3-1 with the best opportunity occurring when Gonyo headed at goal in the 96th minute. Both goalkeepers ultimately proved to be too much as the game ended in a scoreless draw.

Today's result sees Loyola stretch its unbeaten streak to open the season to three games with a record of 1-0-2 while the Hoosiers (3-0-1) have their three-match winning streak snapped.

Loyola will now turn its attention to a pair of games this weekend at the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. The Ramblers will open with a Friday evening clash against Colorado College at 5 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend with a Sunday matinée against Saint Mary's (CA) at 11 a.m.
