DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Brian Bement scored his fourth goal of the season this evening but it wasn't enough as the No. 19 Dayton Flyers defeated the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team by a score of 4-1 this evening at Baujan Field. With its victory tonight, Dayton extends its season-opening winning streak to eight games.
"Unfortunately we didn't stick to our game plan tonight of defending stoutly in key situations and making the most of our chances created through possession," said Loyola head men's soccer coach Neil Jones. "Following Brian's goal, I thought we were really pressing for the equalizer but instead they killed the game with another goal. Now we will look forward to returning to our home stadium on Wednesday evening after five consecutive road games."
Junior Andrew Raymonds, making his second start of the season, recorded the game's first shot in the fifth minute only to see it sail wide of the Dayton net. Just twelve minutes later, following another attempt by Raymonds, Greg Enstone pounded home a cross from Andrew Lightner near the penalty spot to give Dayton a 1-0 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski responded well after giving up the first goal of the evening, making a pair of saves in the latter stages of the first half to ensure the deficit was only one for Loyola at the break.
Dayton wasted little time doubling its lead following the restart. Amass Amankona corralled a goal kick from Dayton netminder Chris Froschauer and slotted it into the lower right corner of the Rambler net in the 47th minute.
Finding itself in a two-goal hole with less than a half to play, the Ramblers began their search for a goal to cut into the deficit. In the 66th minute, Bement slammed home a rebound into the upper right corner of Froschauer's net to bring the score to 2-1. The Waterloo, Ill. product is now tied with senior Eric Nock for the team lead in goals with four.
With a goal on the board, the Rambler offense was invigorated and began to attack again. Loyola unleashed three shots in a six-minute span with the best opportunity falling to sophomore Jake Savino in the 74th minute when his shot was turned away by Froschauer. Just over a minute later, Amankona scored his second goal of the half to re-establish a two-goal advantage for the Flyers. Abe Keller added his fifth goal of the season less than four minutes to bring the lead for the home side to 4-1, closing out the scoring for the evening.
Loyola will look to bounce back from tonight's defeat when it returns back to the friendly confines of Loyola Soccer Park for the first time in nearly a month. The Ramblers and DePaul Blue Demons are set to clash in the latest installment of the Red Line Rivalry at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening in Rogers Park.
